Red Bull Paper Wings Lands in Kuwait

The idea is simple and ingenious at the same time: students must make a plain sheet of paper fly as far, as long or as artistically through the air as possible.
Some of the world’s best student pilots will take on their rivals in hundreds of national qualifiers for the chance of winning a spot in the Red Bull Paper Wings World Final, taking place in May in Austria.

This year, tens of thousands of self-trained, student pilots, will put their outstanding creative skills to the test to enter the world’s leading paper plane contest. Applicants in Kuwait can register for the event by going to www.redbullpaperwings.com, downloading the Red Bull Paper Wings App or entering an aerobatics challenge via our Instagram channel.

Kuwait’s qualifier will take place on April 13th at 360 Mall. To take part in the competition, students must make a single piece of paper fly as far and as long as artistically possible through the air. The Kuwait winners of three categories – Longest Distance, Longest Airtime and Aerobatics – will be invited to the World Final in Austria.

Applications are open to university students, 18 years or older. Entrants can enter all three categories, as individuals, but will only be able to win one category. The judging criteria differs based on the category. The winner of the longest distance category will be the plane that flies the longest distance between the lift-off and the landing point while the winner of the longest airtime will be the plane that manages to stay in the air the longest, counted to the tenth of seconds. New this year, the Aerobatic Category will be fully taken online, as students will be invited to submit a short video via Instagram, including @redbull and #RedBullPaperWings in the caption and tagging Kuwait in the location feature. The number of votes aggregated 1/3 of the best videos. 2 jury members will define the best video as the winner of the category.

Once Kuwait finalists are selected, the successful student pilots will descend on Salzburg’s Hangar-7 for the World Final. Each pilot will be armed with a single A4 sheet of paper, ready to impress fans and judges across the three distinct categories.

Through the Red Bull Paper Wings App, students will have the opportunity to learn how to fold different types of paper planes through augmented reality (AR) and help them with the means to measure their distance and time while they practice. The Red Bull Paper Wings App will also include: events geo-localization, sign-up opportunities, games and much more.

Global winners for Distance, Airtime, Aerobatics and Best ranked player of the AR game will get as a prize a Red Bull Air Race Weekend Experience consisting of flight tickets, accommodation, full pass to watch the training and race over the weekend, access to sky lounge depending on the race, tour and meet & greet with one of the pilots of Red Bull Air Race.
